That is quite an eye opening article! What is your take on it? Does it sound basically accurate? If so, Barzani and Talabani certainly are wolves in sheep's clothing. I suppose they want to steal their share of the money and power just like the leaders in other parts of Iraq. Where does it all end? Thank you for the information.
This reminds me of some things Kurdo used to write about. However, I suspect Rubin overstates the Kurds dissaffection for the PUK and KDP. The answer to truly separating the Kurds from the iron-grip they have on Kurdistan is for Arab-dominated provinces to get their acts together and legislate the concessions to ensure the Kurds will have a homeland. It is fear of Arabs that gives these guys their power, and they will stay strong as long as the Kirkuk question remains open.
I finally had a chance to read this piece last night. It was excellent. Thank you for posting it, Abbas.
It explains some things that I had been wondering about. Namely, Washington's acquiescence of Turkey's activities in Kurdistan. Sounds like they are a little fed up with Barzani's back door dealings with Iran and the fudging with the PKK and are trying to give him a hint that the US isn't real happy.
The comparison to the Palestinian question is rather interesting. We discussed something on those lines a while back in Zeyad's comments section. It would be extremely unfortunate if the Kurds go the way of the Palestinians. Why is it that when you give some people an inch they want to take a mile? The Kurds had something decent started up there and they want to risk it all by biting off more then they can chew. *sigh*
It's also very disappointing to see them backslide into the same type of behavior we saw with Saddam. But then, that seems to be endemic in Iraq for all groups. I don't know that time will help or not with that kind of corruption in society. At least not without some outside oversight. But that is a touchy subject on both sides.
The comparison to the Palestinian/Israeli issue had more to do with this part of the article:
Barzani recognized that any PKK safe haven would be anathema to his interests and moved to prevent it. But with Öcalan in prison and the PKK no threat to his political supremacy, Barzani adopted the group to use as a lever against Turkey.
Why is it that when you give some people an inch they want to take a mile?
This comment had more to do with the Kurds possible desire for land currently held by Turkey. Obviously I was not clear in my comment.
As for the Israelis building more settlements on land designated for a Palestinian state, I do not support that.

I printed out the article and will read it later, Abbas.

Cmar,
lol, kinda reminds one of the Palestine Question and the Arab rulers excuses for tyranny.

Why don't you ask the Israelis? They're the ones who are building illegal settlements on someone else's land.
